Casa Escuela Bilingue – a piece of history in the heart of San Miguel
Location: Centro, SanMiguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico (Five minute walk to the Parroquia or the Instituto Allende)
This unique home in the heart of San Miguel began as a two-room bilingual school in the 1950’s, owned and run by noted educator and writer August Irving Ramirez. It was renovated and expanded in 2002 into a spacious and charming retreat.
Nestled quietly off the main road, Zacateros , Casa Escuela Bilingue, with its two gardens and 3 private bedrooms, is a perfect place to return to after a long day of exploring the many things to see and do in the city.
Located on a private lane, you enter the home through a beautiful walled courtyard with outdoor sitting areas and a lush garden. Stepping inside, you enter the large living room, dining room and a fully equipped kitchen. In the living room, one of the couches turns into a foldout sofa-bed if required. A large second bedroom (with a king or two singles) and private bathroom, with large French doors onto the garden, is up three stairs from the main room.
Upstairs, there is a large master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and a private balcony overlooking the garden. Across the landing is a lovely covered terrace, or sala, with built-in seating, washing facilities and views of the garden. An iron spiral staircase takes you up to the roof top terrace and a garden with a gorgeous 360 degree view of the surrounding city.
Separate from the main house, a private casita with a double bed and private bath opens onto both the private lane and the garden.
Great shopping, restaurants and groceries are just steps away on San Miguel’s best shopping street, but the private passageway and interior gate create a very quiet location. Within one block in either direction, you will find several fine restaurants, small supermarkets, an ice cream shop, and an organic grocery store. Just steps away are several wonderful shops for talavera pattery and tiles, Oaxacan rugs, metalwork and a broad range of Mexican folk art.
There is a house keeper three days a week, a gardener who tends to the many plants and flowered pots several times a week and private laundry facilities for your use. The house is also fitted with a water purification and pressure system. The home has three gas fireplaces – located in the living room and the two bedrooms in the main house. There is a phone with ability to make local calls and wireless internet service is provided.
For home entertainment, the home has two TVs , a DVD player, a CD player with access to cable TV.
